Infrastructure

The East African region is faced with significant infrastructure challenges which create supply side problems to trade in the region. The poor road and rail networks create significant operational problems to the movement of people and goods while congested and inefficient regional ports unnecessarily make East Africa an expensive destination for doing business. Inadequate and relatively expensive electricity supply constrains industry and commerce and poor access to information and communications technology creates communication barriers with the external world. All these undermine economic development due to lost opportunities and poor labour productivity.

EADB supports the development of infrastructure in the region through programmes that emphasise public – private partnerships, strategic investments in key institutions involved in infrastructure development and resource mobilisation programmes for infrastructure development.
